I might be over to ask him for some career advice, too.... :)
I think he knows his father better than even his father knows. As a witness to this conversation, it is my opinion that Matthew was the one who wanted to expensive, shiny things and that he threw in beer to convince his father.
I should also add that later (after his father left the room) Matthew said that he wanted to find a treasure so that he could be rich without working. You know, like pirates?
